Chakana is a modern enterprise that takes up an old family legacy. At the turn of the 19th century, Giovanni Pelizzatti started producing high quality wines in Northern Italy. At present, the descendants of this pioneer have revived this passion. Chakana develops the concept of estate wines, making them in the same place where the grapes are grown. This complete integration between agricultural and enological practices result in wines of superior expression. Chakana offers the best expression of its unique terroir: Agrelo, at Lujan de Cuyo County, Mendoza, Argentina.
Chakana Wines are made in a state-of-the-art winery, built on the estate with the purpose of achieving outstanding quality. Chakana was the 'quechua' name of the Southern Cross constellation. It was represented by a sacred icon that was revered for the protection of crops. This square cross was at the foundation of the spiritual and agricultural life of the ethnic groups living in the highlands of the Andes, the 'Aymaras'. It integrated 3 levels of existence which correspond to water, earth and air. Chakana literally means 'bridge'. It is described as a symbolic power 'to bridge' heaven with earth. Nowadays, Chakana is a bridge between cultures.
