Following graduation in 1994, with a BSc and post graduate study in viticulture and oenology, Alex joined Southcorp, where he worked in Victoria for a year then Australia’s Yarra Valley. This was followed by vintages in Marlborough, France, Spain and Chile.
Alex joined Montana as a Winemaker in 1998 after four years international winemaking experience. After four years as a Winemaker at the Gisborne Winery, Alex was promoted to the position of senior Winemaker at the Tamaki winery in December 2002.
He now holds the position of Regional Winemaker Auckland. His responsibilities include the management of the laboratory and Senior Winemaker and providing blend planning and winemaking oversight to the winemaking team who are charged with the blending and preparing the wine for bottling, cuvée, bottle aging and disgorgement.
Alex’s winemaking philosophy is simple: Wines do not always need or want help, whenever a wine is handled, something is taken away from it. Alex strives to only influence a wine when absolutely necessary and even then he uses the least intrusive methods.
