CHATEAU COS D'ESTOURNEL
Chateau Cos d’Estournel is often referred to as a “Super Second (Growth) and has a long and distinguished history in the St. Estephe region, situated alongside Chateau Lafite Rothschild across the border. This is largely due to M. Gaspard d’Estournel, the "Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe", who founded the estate in 1811.
The name Cos (with the S pronounced) refers to a "hill of pebbles" in the Gascon dialect. It did not take more than a few years before this special Cos d’Estournel became famous with wine lovers and royalty all over the world, not least because of its famous Pagoda design built to celebrate the wine being sold in India.
Recently a complete renovation of Cos d’Estournel took place in not only the wine making facilities and cellars, but in parts of the chateau as well and while the wine making facilities are completely modern, in their 100% gravity design, the outward appearance remains the same. While Cos d’Estournel may not have been as consistent as it could have been in the past, it is now making one of the most exciting Bordeaux wines today, it is thought that they may well be the best that they have ever produced! The wines are big and full bodied and concentrated, but at the same time offer wonderful balance.
