FETTERCAIRN
Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Aberdeenshire, the Fettercairn Distillery has stood since its establishment in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay. As one of the first landowners to champion the licensing of whisky distilleries, Ramsay's efforts have deeply influenced Scotch whisky's storied history.
Strategically located at the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains, Fettercairn Distillery is uniquely positioned to harness some of Scotland's purest water sources, pristine waters that are naturally filtered through ancient granite.
This exceptional water source, combined with Fettercairn's hallmark innovation introduced in the mid-20th century – the unique cooling ring for their stills – sets the distillery apart. This ingenious technique, where water cools the exterior of the copper stills, selectively allows only the lightest vapours to rise, resulting in a distinctive range of whiskies. These whiskies are renowned for their tropical notes, marked by the sun-kissed sweetness of pineapple, honey and banana.
With the Fettercairn 12, we experience the distillery’s true character via its fresh tropical flavours, while the 16-year-old showcases the art of maturation; the curated annual batches highlight the profound impact of different barrel aging on its distinctive character.
Matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, the Fettercairn 22 is a remarkable expression that exemplifies the distillery's prowess in the art of aging.
While we see the outcome of Fettercairn’s labour with an intriguing core range, it has been no easy feat. Whyte & Mackay are committed to sustainability, focusing on reforestation, sustainable forest management and locally sourced materials, which marks a significant shift toward eco-conscious practices within the industry. Scottish Oak barrels will soon make more of an appearance (the 18 yr old has first use) part of a wider, forward-thinking Scottish Oak Programme.
Venturing into the world of Fettercairn's whiskies is to partake in more than just the customary ritual of whisky tasting. It is to immerse oneself in an ongoing narrative of innovation and excellence. Give them a go!
