The region of Rheingau is best known for the white varietal Riesling and although it is one of the smallest of the thirteen official German wine regions, it is also one of the most well known. Located in the states of Hessen and Rheinland Pflaz, the region's winemaking history is said to date back to the 8th century. The region is also reknown as being the home of the highly esteemed Geisenheim Enological Institute which has helped to elevate the technical savvy in German viticulture.
