The Canterbury wine region in New Zealand's South Island is expanding steadily and although relatively new, the first grapes were grown in the late 70s, the region is fast making a name for itself as producer of top quality, exciting new wines. The region has the city of Christchurch at its heart and includes Banks Peninsula, the Canterbury Plains and Waipara with standout red Pinots and sweeter style Rieslings coming out of the limestone soiled Waipara region and crisp, lighter style Rieslings often produced from the cooler climes of the Plains.
