This is a very famous collectors bottle for two reasons. It was the year that Mouton was officially made a 1st Growth, and the baron declared on the label, Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change. First I am, second I was, Mouton has not changed. It is also famous because the Baron dedicated the wine to Pablo Picasso who died in 1973. His daughter Paloma allowed the use of his beautiful painting Bacchanale (1959), that had been owned for a long time by the Mouton Museum. 1973 was not however one of the great vintages, critics throughout the 1970s and 1980s did not like this wine and expected it to not have a long life ahead. Yet one of the wonders of wine is that it is a living liquid, and especially in Bordeaux prone to long peaks and troughs. From recent cellartracker notes worldwide, it appears that this wine has gained a new lease on life since it hit 40 years of age, and is now drinking beautifully.
